pituitary tumors are a unique kind of brain tumor: in general they are not cancerous, meaning they don't spread elsewhere, and very often their significance is that they produce one or more of the hormones that the pituitary normally makes, but in abnormal amounts. That can cause various problems, depending on which hormone is involved. In addition, the location at the bottom of the brain, just on top of the optic nerves (main nerves of vision) means there can be visual disturbances as well. The good news is that when surgery is needed, it can often be done through a very small incision through the nose, as opposed to a major opening of the skull for other tumors of the brain. Some tumors that are small and producing no or minimal symptoms can safely be left alone and followed. click here for more info
