Occasionally when I yawn or swallow hard my uvula flips up behind my soft palate and sticks. In addition, the soft palate appears to constrict in a muscle spasm. It's uncomfortable and feels like I am swallowing my tongue. This can go on for days and causes pain in the soft palate from constant muscle contractions. I have been unable to diagnose this problem and wondered if there were any nurses or docs out there that could offer some advice. I am a 37 year old healthy female.

although I'm not an expert in that particular area, I would think that possibilities include certain neurological disorders or muscular disorders associated with swallowing. There are tests that could be done: swallowing studies in particular. I'd consider seeing your doctor or a gastroenterologist.
