I've been having shoulder pain that is waking me up several times a night and has gotten progressively worse every day for the last couple months. After doing some research, shoulder impingement seems the most likely problem. I have an appointment with the ortho that did my hand surgery in two weeks.
My question is, is there a genetic predisposition to bone spurs? My Mom & Dad both had to have shoulder surgeries due to impingement caused from bone spurs.
I'm 46 and in good health. I do have osteoarthritis in my hands and hip.

osteoarthritis is something that can run in the family...since you have it in your joints already it is likely to be in other joints as well.
investigate labral tear or rotator cuff injury also. a xray procedure called an arthrogram using gadolinieum and mri with the gadolinieum in your joint is a good diagnostic tool for these problems.
it is usually a "easy" surgery with about 2/3 month recoup. before you're at 100%.

Maybe twirling your arms around, holding a light weight when you are not too busy, will help. Ask the ortho for at home exercises appropriate to your history and present condition.
