I couldn't really find a better forum for this, so here it goes: I went to a concert with a friend of mine a few days ago. We were very close to very loud noise for a couple hours, and of course afterwards our ears were ringing for a while. I was just wondering if anybody knows why your ears ring loud noise. It's more an intellectual interest than anything. I tried searching only for actual causes, but all I could find was a plethora of sites, which all seemed to copy there information word for word from each other, about how it is unhealthy and you should avoid it at all costs. I just want to know what causes the ringing.

"What?" is not clear, but in general terms it would seem likely that the ear-ringing results from some level of trauma to the inner ear, where the hair cells respond to sound by producing nerve signals which travel to auditory area of the brain.
