My son just had all his wisdom teeth cut out yesterday morning, they were pretty impacted says the doctor. He prescribed Percocet, and the nurse suggested Advil in between dosages, if needed. Okay, the first twenty four hours are past, but this morning has been hectic. I have been giving clear liquids, and he even ate some egg drop soup(his favorite), and chicken noodle soup yesterday. Boy was he in pain, he woke up screaming, when the gauze had to be removed, but went back to sleep, after the med kicked in, doesn't remember that part. Well, I called the doctor this morning due to him vomiting after the ibuprofen and his next dosage of percocet was due. My son has reflex so this did not help the situation at all, he couldn't keep anything down. The doctor ordered Toradol 10 mg. instead of the percocet and also a tab called promethazine 25 mg for the nausea, he wanted to order the suppository, but there's no way my teenage boy will allow me to administer that one, he is very personal about his private parts. I was told if the pain gets too bad to give Tylenol between doses, so that's what I did. Since the ibuprofen had either been thrown up or made him nauseated, I didn't want to give the Toradol right away, I gave him Tylenol Maximum strength (1000 mg.) and I also gave him the promethazine. Keep in mind his weight is 235 lbs. Is this enough for his weight?
He's finally quieted down, my question is: Do you think the Toradol will do the trick? And will it make his stomach nauseated too? I don't like seeing him in this condition, he is doing pretty good considering how they had to cut into the jaw bone to get these wisdom teeth out. He is use to the vomiting and actually has gotten to be very good at getting to a toilet or the garbage can (with a bag in it) I have by his bed. I think he is growing out of the reflex or just gotten used to it, knowing not to jump around alot after eating, sleep with body angled, etc. He had this at birth. He is doing alot better than when he was as a baby.
And is Tylenol irratable to the stomach too?

The Toradol will give him better pain control (MUCH) and it will be no more irritating than Tylenol (generally). Too bad he won't allow the suppositories though.. they work well.. especially for people not keeping things down orally.

Anyway, give him the Promethazine and half an hour later (to settle the stomach) give him the Toradol.

Another thing, give him the pain med about an hour before bed and as soon as he wakes up in the morning... he will have better pain control AND be able to sleep and do his morning routine better.

I can fully understand how upsetting this is. Be careful with Percocet and Tylenol. Percocet contains Tylenol. Percocet and most all strong pain meds can make you sick to your stomach and trow up. Keep giving him the phenergan so he doesn't get sick. Don't skip on that one. It may make him drowsy. I would switch back to the ibuprophen instead of more Tylenol. I have found Percocet to be more effective than Toridal. Have patience. Every day the pain should ease up a bit. Yes, the dosage is fine for his weight.

Try to keep him distracted even if it means sleeping with the TV on. That sometimes helps. There is nothing worse that pain with dark and silence. Nothing else to think about but the pain. I probably misspelled everything, but I hope you get the message. Hang in there! It will get a bit better every day. If he shows no improvement, call the doctor.

Thanks for the advice, I think we got thru the hard part, (knock on wood!) He wants to go to the movies, so I guess he's feeling better, lol. Actually, I think he asked this yesterday too, but I told him he would probably not remember much, since he'll be on the pain killer, lol. Well, guess I'll try and distract him a little, he has been such a trooper on this one. I didn't have this much trouble as he did, guess it's different on each of us.

I'm glad your son is feeling better. I had an awful time when I had my wisdom teeth out. Mostly because I was allergic to whatever painkiller they gave me. So I just stuck with Tylenol instead. It worked pretty well.
Just keep him on soft foods for a while and make sure he keeps the area clean, and doesn’t overdo it.
