Hi, sorry if this is the wrong forum.
My question is this. My left leg is not working right. Makes me stumble. My son got me a 4 point cane. This will help me when I go out.
I was concerned of becoming a speed bump or even road kill when crossing a street.
Do you hold the cane in your left hand to strengthen the left leg? My first instinct is to grab it with my right hand.
Anyone have experience with this?
Any advice?
Answers will be appreciated.
Thank you.

I found a website that discusses this issue:

How to use a cane when walking

quote:
To use your stick correctly, you should ensure that it supports the same side as your injury or weakness. For example, if your left leg requires support then your walking stick should be held in your left hand, regardless of whether this is your dominant hand or not. Using your stick in this way will help increase stability and balance while both walking and standing.

"Let me begin by saying, if you plan on using a walking stick or cane for support or as a mobility aid, you should first consult with your GP or physiotherapist. They will be in the best position to advise on the best use of a walking stick for you. The following is intended as a general guide and should not replace the professional advice of a qualified medical practitioner."

The above quote is also from Sheras1's link. I have been walking with a cane or walker for about four years, and following my orthopedist's recommendation I have held the cane on the same side as the better leg. This appears to me to take the weight off the weaker leg and provide a less awkward and more balanced gait. I guess it's a case of chacun son gout.

Hi Sherasi, left hand with gimpy left leg, that is what my son the nurse told me also.
Thank for the very informative link.
Frankvan, thanks for chiming in.
My instinct is to go with the right hand.
This is supported by my sister-in-law who also is a very new cane user and her therapist advised opposite hand of gimpy leg.
Guess I'll have to get me some therapy to CURE my leg.
Sherasi, franvan thanks for listening and helping. Now I have to look up what chacun son gout means.
