A year or so ago I was at work and started having a sharp pain in my left side lower back just under my ribs. The pain increased so much I couldn't take in a large breath with out the pain increasing sharply to where it would "catch" my breath. They took me to the hospital by ambulance because the pain increased so much I collapsed to the floor in tears and couldn't move. By the time I got to the hospital the pain was gone- they didn't run any tests on me and didn't give me any suggestions either.

Last night the pain came back, only not as bad, the pain fluctuated from mild to sharp but stayed in the same spot to where, for about 2 hours at work, I was walking around pushing in on the area and I sorta looked all twisted up. Deep breaths again would "catch" the pain and I would stop breathing for a few seconds. Later the pain went away.

Is this what a kidney stone feels like? I thing the pain is in the kidney. I don't have any pain urinating. I have problems urinating since the birth of my 5th child. But no pain. I have heard that the kidney stone is only painfull while moving. I am just really confused if I should see a regular doc or go ahead and see a urologist or if I am overreacting and it was just a muscle spasm. Anyone ever suffer from one of these?

You are not overreacting. I don't know if you should skip right to the specialist, but it sounds serious to see at least see a general practitioner or the like. They will be able to tell whether you should see a specialist or not.

Pain in your body means something is wrong. Go see a doctor and do not let them stop testing and looking until they find the reason for the pain.

It's absolutely not true that a kidney stone is only painful when moving. It's surprising they didn't at least check your urine in the hospital that first time. Kidney stone is certainly on the list, probably at the top. It could be a disc problem in the back, too. At minimum you should be having urine checked when the pain is there. In any case, see a doctor; whether you start with a urologist or a primary care doc probably doesn't matter in the long run, but assuming you have a doctor you like, starting there makes sense.

Thank you all for your advice. I only thought I would skip the reg doc for the specialist since I already have problems with my bladder after 5 kids and 1 c-section. To politely describe the trouble its like the tube doesn't know how to shut off! and I have to cross my legs to sneeze or cough or else I need some new pants!
Thanks again
