there is a hereditary component to spina bifida, although the exact nature is not known. If a person has a child with sb, there is an increased chance of having another child with it. The odds can be improved by taking folic acid, which must begin at least a month before conception.

I also would like to include that my bf didnot get sb hereditarily it was because of drug misuse and i have no family history so does that help our odds of having a child without it??
it sounds like your chance of having a child with it is hardly greater than that of the general population. But when you are trying to conceive, it would be a good idea to start taking folic acid. Talk with an obstetrician or pediatrician at at that point.
