I was just wondering if anyone knew if spina bifida is hereditary and what are the odds of conceiving a child with it if a parent has it???

there is a hereditary component to spina bifida, although the exact nature is not known. If a person has a child with sb, there is an increased chance of having another child with it. The odds can be improved by taking folic acid, which must begin at least a month before conception.

it sounds like your chance of having a child with it is hardly greater than that of the general population. But when you are trying to conceive, it would be a good idea to start taking folic acid. Talk with an obstetrician or pediatrician at at that point.

You can get spinal bifida from drugs? That is hard to believe. I think you have more to worry about from drug abuse than sb. frown
