I have never had one (knock on wood) but have known quite a few folks who have had them. Apparently some of the common symptoms mimic the "stomach flu" - a general achy feeling, nauseousness, pain in the stomach. One person I know had a fever and sweats - but didn't think it was of any concern until she threw up and saw what looked like coffee grinds in the toilet. That is symptomatic of a bleeding ulcer. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms (also including burping, bloating, heartburn), and you get relieve by food consumption, then it could be possible you have an ulcer. When in doubt...check it out!

symptoms depend a bit on where exactly the ulcer is, how deep, etc: the danger is actually from those that cause the fewest symptoms, because if you don't know you have one, it can get deep enough to cause complications such as bleeding or perforation before you become aware. Typically and ulcer causes a burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen, and it's made better by eating (the food buffers the acids) and is worse between meals or at night. Often there's burping, mild nausea. The way to be diagnosed is to see your doctor; some might treat based on symptoms, many would order a scope to be passed into the stomach to have a look. click here for more info
