Well, I can understand your fear about getting ill. Especially with an illness so recently notoriously hard to get rid of.
I would say to your friend, "Regardless of what your illness is, I just don't want to get sick. I'll visit when you get better". Then, send a get-well soon card with some flowers.

With a poorly understood disease like SARS traveling around, there is no such thing as being too cautious. SARS has a very low death rate, but it is not known why it kills the people it kills. There have also been a number of potential relapses, increasing the spread because those thought to have recovered may in fact still be contagious. I don't think you're being paranoid. I do think that if your friend is as ill as she sounds, and since her traveling companions are ill as well, she really ought to see a doctor and be checked out. It is irresponsible on her part if she has a contagious virus (SARS or not) and has not been professionally diagnosed. There is no telling how many people she could be exposing. With everything going around, it is important for those of us that are healthy to keep our immune systems boosted. You should tell your friend, as Sherasi said, that you simply do not want to get sick. She should understand that. Also, recommend NyQuil, chicken soup and orange juice.
