The post on borderline diabetes has led to this question. The person being discussed is my friend Joan. She is 40 y.o., active, exercises regularly, is upbeat and optimistic, and eats well balanced meals. (She and I have the same nutritionist.) She is a vital member of my diet and exercise team.

Joan is newly diagnosed with CHF,which may or may not have caused borderline diabetes. She developed edema 6 weeks ago, thinking it was PMS. Without a family history, and without previous symptoms of this condition, how did it develop? Are there no warning signs? Is it a disease? Is it stoppable, or reversible?

vedere

BTW, she is handling this much better than I. She is concerned about being kicked off the team.

edema (I assume you mean in the feet) in a 40 year old who actively exercizes seems a bit unlikely to have been caused by CHF; sounds like if that's what they think is going on she should see a cardiologist.

Thank you both for your replies.

Samantha,
Your site was helpful. I also checked the website for the American Heart Association, searching for Congestive Heart Failure.

Sid,
Thank you for your recommendation. Yes, the swelling is in her feet and legs. I am leary because, eight years ago, I was diagnosed with a heart condition, which was later found to be 100% non-existant.

My physician listened to me when I said why the specialist's diagnosis did not make sense to me. After sorting through the symptoms again, he agreed with me, and kept testing until he found the cause, which was completely unrelated to the heart.
