my fish are being very weird lately. i had 5 goldfish, and bought one more. after adding him i noticed they started floating around the tank with their heads down and tails up. (i woudnt really call it floating... they were moving their fins and actually going places). they do this until they run into something (the side of the tank, each other, then dart away and do it again. what the heck is going on?? are they all just going crazy? **************************************************************** 02-25-03, 11:25 AM vshelton2 I think you're fish are sick. I would go or at the very least call your pet store and tell them how they are acting and they can probably tell you what you need to do. The medications are probably sold at the pet store. Hope this helps.
02-25-03, 03:57 PM mattlynda i went to the vet and the only thing he could think of is that they were having a reaction to the medication i was using to clean up the bacterial infection they had. seems it had a mild sedative in it and it was making them a bit sleepy. i turned down the temperature a couple degrees for the rest of the time im giving them the treatment and they are doing fine now Smile
03-05-03, 04:18 PM Chazz123 Are your goldfish fancy goldfish or common goldfish? The problem could have been with their swim bladder. Fancy goldfish have the problem alot just because of the way their bodys are shaped. It usually rights itself once their digestive system clears. It can be fatal though. I'm glad they're better now.
03-07-03, 11:08 AM mattlynda theyre just feeder fish i rescued from being someones dinner Big Grin but theyre my fish and i dont want to see them sick. the big ones been doing it again lately, but i havent used any medication as his infection is all cleared up. im thinking he may be neurotic :] anyone who thinks fish dont have personalities should visit mine sometime. i had a cichlid that would play dead to get treats :] he was a riot. easier to train than my dogs too Big Grin
07-17-03, 11:48 PM mattlynda ok guys, they are doing it again. and other weird things.
the little one (we call him mephisto) seems to be in love with the waterfall filter. he will swim up to where the water is entering the tank, swim around it a few times without touching the bubbles, then stick his backside in the waterflow, do a 'dance' where he wiggles like crazy without going anywhere, then take off around the tank a few times like he was shot out of a cannon.
hes also taken to burying himself under the rocks. he will burrow his way down until you cant see anything except a tail, and stay like that for hours. i thought he was dead more than once, but if you poke him, he takes off and then stares at you for a few minutes. that is rather creepy. ever had a fish stare at you and you KNOW he is thinking 'oooo if i had legs....'.
can fish have neurological disorders? i think this one definatly has something loose.
07-18-03, 02:36 AM piggins You might speak with your vet again, and ask if your fish might possibly have a parasite infestation, possibly fluke. Parasites can burden a fish to the point that they will lay at the bottom, which only allows the parasites to manifest.
07-18-03, 08:22 PM Tree Was the fifth goldfish REALLY a "him"?
Maybe it's a female that you added and now the man fishes are going looney!!??
Smile
07-18-03, 09:12 PM mattlynda hey, you know, could be! the weird one is the last one we added, maybe its a she and its her version of makeup and perfume. 07-21-05, 11:09 AM HEAT if that fish you added is a female then thats a mating dance to try to impress the female
11-22-05, 03:31 PM dragonbright Ha you think your fish are crazy. My fish well..he doesn't have a name...attempted suicide! Seriously he swam right up to the water filter and got himself sucked to it. And so i freed him and now he refuses to swim right side up. He swims and floats upside down. And just today he got himself sucked to the filter again after swimming right up to it...and now i think it's traumatizing my other fish...lol the other one just looks at this one like it's crazy or something. LOL! fish are weird!
