My fish pond is about 300 gallons and I want to use a sand filter. I have built several filters, but none seem to work correctly. I put 700GPH through the filter, perhaps that is tooooo much. I have tried sand, gravel, nylons, water filters, foam filters, all seem to plug up pretty easy ! Have about 20 to 24 fish in the pond 3" to 8" in length. Looking for goooooooood plans for a sand filter.

I built the filter out of 5 1/2 inch PVC and made my own one way valve with a marble and two reducers 1/2 x 1 1/4,and a 1 1/4" coupling. One of the reducers had a little funnel shape on the inside for the marble to rest into, on the inside (different Mfg different shapes) Anway I put it all together and have a small 700 GPH pump and it seems to work pretty well. I think my pump is a little small, so I buried the PVC into the ground 12" to reduce head pressure. Probably will invest into a larger pump if it seems to do the job. I didn't have to install a gate valve as the 700GPH was within limits, if I go the larger pump then the gate valve will probably have to be installed. Thanks for the information.........
