They were created at Antoine's restaurant in New Orleans in the late 1890s, and reportedly named for John D. Rockefeller because it's they are "so rich".
The Oysters Rockefeller sauce was named for the Rockefeller family, the richest in flavour in the world at that time. http://www.antoines.com/history.html Most sources that give a year say 1899.
