One of the famous symbols of Lloyds is the Lutine Bell.

It was traditionally rung to herald important announcements to underwriters and brokers - one stroke for bad news and two for good.

I am sure that Kelley is correct. Lloyds insured many ships, and one bell often mean a huge loss for someone or a group.
