Who is the world's richest woman not to have got her wealth through marriage or inheritance but made it all herself? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 10-15-06, 04:16 PM DorianGreyed I assume that it is Oprah Winfrey. Here is another, who seems to qualify. Forbes lists her at billion +, and Oprah at $1.3 billion.
Country of citizenship: Spain Residence: La Coruna, Spain Industry: Retailing Marital Status: divorced , 2 children
Helped her then-husband, Amancio Ortega, make gowns and lingerie in their home. That business eventually became $5.8 billion (sales) Inditex, an apparel manufacturer that also owns Zara retail stores. Though divorced years ago, still holds 7% stake and until last June held a seat on the board. Also has holdings in a maker of a fingerprinting identification system for newborns and in a company that is looking for cancer treatments in compounds found in the sea. She is also president of the Paideia Foundation, which helps people with physical and mental disabilities. -------- The World's Billionaires, Forbes.com
10-15-06, 05:23 PM FredPuli No DG. And 1.3 billion? That's a lot less than this lady has made from scratch. She's truly self-made and has not even been in business with an entrepreneurial husband. What is more surprising than her wealth is her nationality. The field in which she has made her money is not an obvious one for a future billionaire either.
10-15-06, 05:38 PM DorianGreyed Mera's worth, which I meant to imclude, is upwards of $ 2 billion. I have no idea who is worth more.
10-15-06, 05:54 PM DorianGreyed Every other woman listed by Forbes as wealthier than Mera and Winfrey in their Working Women section started with inherited wealth.

According to Bloomberg this lady is worth 3.4 billion USD.And she is neither American nor European.(Think of a big country, the country, which you wouldn't have expected to have any billionaires Wink )
10-15-06, 06:12 PM DorianGreyed Fred, this question really belongs in Trivia. When I first posted, I didn't realize that you knew the answer. I'll move it tomorrow.
10-15-06, 07:45 PM Sarai I'm making a guess without doing a google search. There is a very wealthy woman in Mexico who owns Corona. I don't remember her name. I'm guessing she's the one.
10-16-06, 07:15 AM aminator2002 I have to believe that this lady is in China or Fred would not be leading so much.
10-16-06, 07:17 AM aminator2002 "But last week it was reported that China's richest billionaire is now a woman - 49-year-old Zhang Yin is worth a cool $3.4bn (£1.8bn). The tycoon is the world's richest self-made woman, having built China's largest paper recycling business, Nine Dragons Paper, which was floated on the Hong Kong stock market just six months ago. She seems an eloquent symbol of the new China; a capitalist whose success and wealth was unthinkable before Deng Xiaoping freed China from the embrace of Maoism in 1978. It is capitalists such as her who are proof that paradoxically it is communist China that is home to the globe's most vigorous capitalism. And she is a woman."
10-16-06, 11:38 AM DorianGreyed Sarai, you are thinking of Maria Asuncion Aramburuzabala, who, along with her family, has an inherited wealth of 1.8 billion. She is ranked #366 in Forbes list.
Forbes apparently either missed Zhang Yin, or her worth when they made this list wasn't high enough. The list started at $1 billion, and contained 691 named individuals. Zhang was not even on China's s top ten list.

Once she floated the shares she went rapidly from being the 36th wealthiest Chinese to being an easy first.
