Do either of you have a source for this? I suspect that Coke was the first carbonated soft drink to be consumed in outer space. I believe Tang, which was used by US astronauts in the 1960s is a soft drink. Scroll down to 356[This message was edited by Doriangreyed on 09-23-03 at 12:38 PM.]

Thanks, Mike. Unless I missed it, there was no mention of 'the first soft drink' in space. I just Googled the phrase "'soft drink' + definition" and scanned 10 pages worth of replies. All government regulations would seem to include Tang. Certainly, according to the government, all soft drinks are not carbonated, and even the industy seems to acknowledge it, as I saw several organizations with "carbonated soft drink" in their title. Certainly the soft drink industry is implying that there are non-carbonated soft drinks. The most of the various 'people's dictionaries' on the Net seem to define soft drink as carbonated, but not all do.

DG - I was actually going to mention that, although it usually implies carbonation, soft drink actually means any drink without alcohol. I was also going to note that my link doesn't actually say that it was the first non-alcoholic carbonated beverage consumed in space, but it does imply it and show that it was in space in 1985. Unfortunately, that was about the time I looked at my watch .

I read the site, Jenny, and it certainly does say that. The site has the appearance of an official one, but isn't; it is a fan site. There are certainly a great deal of interesting facts there, but I saw a few things that I disagree with. It also claims to have the Coke formula, something that is a very guarded secret. I would not use the site as a source, but as a starting place from which to launch research. I have sent the site owner a link to this page in the hope that he will correct the "First soft drink in outer space" error. Thanks for the link, Jenny.
