Perfect answer! A good day for a birthday for Mrs Mozart too, for that was the day in 1964 that a girl group scored the first all-girl No. 1 hit in Briatin with the song ...(Oh, sorry - this is music trivia

Yes, what happened to the 'Beaujolais run', when competitors would race from London to Beaujolais, collect a case or more of the new wine at the moment it was released, and race back to London? Any means would do; helicopter, jet, car, bike, anything; and the Race was sponsored by a national paper (Sunday Times, I think) My chambers was represented by one of our mad members (we had no other kind) on a big, old, BMW bike and won the motorcycle section one year. (Those were the days! The young kids today take legal life too seriously )
The beaujolais tradition's dying fast now, even in France. Some people only ever saw it as a PR consultant's dream, a cynical commercial plan to shift new wine while over-charging for it, but it was the ritual that appealed to me. All those would-be wine-maestros, nodding, deadly serious, as they savoured the first mouthfiul in the bar. Then that brief nod of the head, an expansive gesture of worldly wisdom and delivery of the time-honoured verdict: "Ah oui, il est bon cette année!” Sic transit, etc. etc.

Absolutely cool question. I had never heard of this. It seems there is a festival for this also held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin ( Milwaukee event link ) and Sacramento, California ( Sacramento link ), as well as many other places, Anyhow, cool info, thanks.
a) shippers were allowed to shift vast quantities of the stuff into bond at ports. It was in Britain before anyone else could fetch it from the place of origin. It was in pubs, winebars and off licences in the morning
b) every year the wine was more metallic than the year before!
