He was Born in Liverpool Yet Bought up in Glossop Cheshire(JennyRoberts area) He was a self confessed Spiv Some of the Press dubbed him the King Of that area Yet the strange thing is Many of the people that followed in his shadow were of the Crimimal fraternity such as the Kray Twins Yet the Person I'm looking for rarely crossed swords with the Law Biggest punishment? A £5,000 fine

Hi Bedstor, The answer is Paul Raymond. He died yesterday at the age of 82. His property and publishing empire was worth an estimated 650 million pounds.
He opened a strip bar, that was later to become the Revuebar in 1958 and within 2 years had 450,000 members. It was repeatedly raided by the police: "... he introduced two tap dancers to his routine. A ruling by the Lord Chancellor forbade any nudes moving on stage, so to comply with it Raymond placed women on podiums which were wheeled across stage while they remained stationary. It was genius – and legal....
Revuebar regulars Bonnie Bell the Ding Dong Girl and Julia Mendez the Snake Girl soon fell foul of a judge, who labelled the venue "filthy, disgusting, and beastly" before ordering Raymond to pay a fine of £5,000 for keeping a disorderly house.
( Maybe the conservative British judiciary had a problem with the girls' names, which incidentally, I think, were very original!)
I think he also owned some magazines. I don't know much about these, because I think they were only for men.
He came to be known as the King of Soho; London's sex shop distict. The title makes sense, if as the above article says, he died owning 60 of Soho's 87 acres.

Yep, that's right Bedstor! All the notable people live round here. If I remember rightly, Ritz lived in Glossop at sometime. Correct me if I'm wrong Ritz, but I have such a good memory and I am sure you told me that you came from Glossop

I lived in the area of Glossop known as Old Glossop from the age of 7 until I was 18, ie from 1957 until 1964. After that I went to London for three years. When I returned my folk had moved to Denton, closer to Manchester (I told Jenny that, yesterday, and she said that she was not surprised!) If you knew Glossop as I did, you will not be surprised to hear that, whenever I pass through that town, the music 'Duelling Banjos' from the film, 'Deliverance' comes to mind...
...
but don't tell them, will you...?...?...
