What particular piece of art did the Patriots melt down to recycle into bullets, making it the first metal recycling in America ?

I know that there is a statue of Benedict Arnold's (left?) boot, a reference to his being wounded at a battle in which his leadership saved the day. I'm assuming that there was a full statue, and that it was melted down for bullets, possibly for the War of 1812. This is just a guess, and if it's not correct, I'm stumped, and can't wait for someone who knows the answer.

Nice guess DG, but according to my source, it was prior to 1812. However you are right about being a statue but not the one mentioned.

A paragraph from a New York Times article says :

Tradition records that the gigantle equestrian taie of George III, erected on Bowling Green in the years preceding the Revolution, was utterly demolished, and that the lead of which his Majesty was composed was melted into bullets to be buried at the red coats by the Continental troops.
