THE first concept of a brassiere - from the old French word "arm protector" - appears in US Vogue. Interesting bedstor, I have never heard that "arm protector" version. The real term in French for a bra is a "Soutien-Gorge" A "brassiere " could be a shirt for newborn made of wool that ties up in the back or when the first bras appeared ,women had to lift their arms up high, and get them through the "belts".... so the term "BRASsiere" could have some sense in that way. But "Protector"??? Could be an old piece of equipment for knights and soldiers or something like that. I'll research it.
