"The Lost Boys of the Sudan" is the name given by various aid organisations to the boys who were displaced or orphaned during the Sudanese civil war, between 1984 and 2005. Parents and daughters were systematically slaughtered. Many of the young girls were raped or sold into slavery. The reason so many boys escaped was that, in many cases, at the time of the attacks they were away from their villages tending herds. The surviving boys made it to refuge camps, enduring arduous journies to do so. From 2001 onwards almost 4,000 of these boys were resettled in the US. Most didn't know when their birthdays were, or how old they were. They were given January 1, as their birth date upon entering the US, and their ages were allocated to them according to their height. 'Lost Boys' of Sudan share birthday, hope
