The first US Dollars were coins that were issued in 1794 and were based on the Spanish Dollar of the time.

"The first issue of dollars featured a Liberty head on the obverse, and an eagle within a wreath on the reverse. This type was issued until 1798 when a new reverse design was introduced with a heraldic eagle bearing the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and which was issued until 1803, apart from a few very rare specimens dated 1804, never officially issued."

Sammy, good question, and Kwll, good answer. Checking this lead to my discovery of an error on the US Mint's Web page. See my post for more about the error.
Your country thanks both of you ! (So do I!)

I have At the time of the American Revolution the Spanish "pillar dollar" was the principal coin of commerce in the American colonies. Another widely distributed world currency was the German thaler.

The dollar was established as the money unit of the United States by the Continental Congress on july 6,1785. Only in 1792 did the U.S. mint begin minting silver dollars.

Sammy, my source is the US Mint, and it says 1794. But then we all know the Mint makes mistakes !
Seriously, what is your source? I will check several sites, and see who says what.
