I knew I would get someone with this one. Try again, Jenny. You are right that Hawaiian has only 12 letters, but there is one with less. (I know, I know, everybody knows it is Hawaiian, except that it isn't.)

Binary laguage has two "letters" 1 & 0 or Australian Aboriginal language has none, as it is a non-written language. I'm not sure this is what you're after though...!

You're right, Fizzy, I'm not. The answer is a real, 'natural' language, spoken by humans.

Jenny, you are good. You have a different one than I do, but both have the same number of letters. I have the Rotokas language of Papua New Guinea. Somewhere, in my emails, I have a letter from someone in New Guinea confirming this, and will post is as soon as I find it. Can you post a source?

From the CIA World FactBook-
Melanesian pidgin in much of the country is lingua franca; English is official but spoken by only 1%-2% of the population note: 120 indigenous languages

I can find no mention of a Solomon Island language. Since New Guinea is so close, I think the author means Rotokas. I have an email in to the CSM about this, and will keep you posted.
