How much flow can you get through a 6" schedule 40 steel pipe?

On another post, you received an answer for steel pipe dimensions. Assuming your substance is liquid water, you will likely want to keep flow in the 6 to 8 foot per second range. A higher rate of flow (unless the steel is stainless) may damage the pipe over time, and a much lower rate of flow will result in excessive pipeline costs.

If memory serves me correctly, standard weight steel pipe has a volume equal to 1.5 gallons per linear foot (you can look it up!). If so, then you are looking in a range, for water, of 9 to 12 gallons per second, or 540 to 720 gallons per minute.

The comment above is on the money. More information is required to make an accurate judgement....'fuse

How long is the pipe and what is the inlet pressure?

From Crane Technical Paper # 410 (Flow of Fluids Through Valves, Fittings, and Pipe) the flow of 60 F water through 100 feet of 6 inch schedule 40 steel pipe versus the pressure drop is as follows:

Flow = 100 GPM; delta P = .036 PSI

Flow = 200 GPM; delta P = .130 PSI

Flow = 500 GPM; delta P = .720 PSI

Flow = 1000 GPM; delta P = 2.68 PSI

Flow = 2000 GPM; delta P = 10.3 PSI

**for lengths other than 100 feet, the pressure drop is proportional to the length. Thus for 50 feet of pipe the pressure drop is approx one half the values given above.
