More of an announcement than I question, I guess.

Yesterday we (my partner and I) went and signed and notarized Domestic Partnership Papers.

Starting January of 2004 My partner's company will give benefits to Domestic Partners. This has been a long battle with a company which is based in San Francisco and has its main office there and hires a good many gay and lesbian people.

This means in January I will be covered medically under his insurance which is a hella better than what I had and what I presently have (none). This is a big hurtle for us, one which will financially ease a big burden of having to basically deny myself medical assistance since we could not afford to keep to insurance policies. I have gone nearly a year without medical coverage, having to pick and choose which prescriptions to fill. The choices based on the lesser of two or three evils has meant that I have had to suffer in silence the physical pains and carry a burden of concern over what happens if I have an accident.

Not only that but we discovered that California also has domestic partnership laws (As of July of this year) which will change a lot of things for us: http://www.ss.ca.gov/dpregistry/forms/sf-dp1.pdf
This change affects what will happen to our property in case either of us dies.

AB 205 ( http://www.eqca.org/ll_work_faq_ab205.html?o=0 ) will make a lot of headway for the rights of domestic partners, things that married folk take for granted will be closer to the reach of those of us who live like married folk but are not allowed the same treatments.

http://www.eqca.org/factsheet_ab205.pdf outlines it more.

I am so glad you are able to get Health care as a partner in a relationship. My best friend, here in Pennsylvania, is also gay and he does not yet have a long-term relationship. This area is so conservative, I am not sure that there are carriers that would cover him as a partner, though. Frown

I have read that the number of Domestic Partner Families in California is arounf 100,000 - that is the population of a medium sized city !!!!

The thing is that no one is saying much about it. It is not being reported on, it is not getting any media attention, if you don't know you can't get on the boat...

Cheers

It is a step in the right direction as far as treating people equal regardless of their life choices, beliefs etc.

Well, that is about the time that the "7 year itch" starts... fairly normal in most relationships I think... wondering if the grass is greener .....

Congrats to you and your partner, David.

Maybe you can answer a question for me.

Does this new law cover only domestic partners of the same sex, or does it cover cover male and female partners too?

I have recently moved to California to live with my boyfriend, and I don't understand everything this state does yet. We feel married, but we're not able to marry at this time.

Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me, if you can. I've always enjoyed your posts. You explain things very well.

From one Californian to another, congratulations David. My company has offered domestic partner benefits for quite sometime. We are also heaquartered from San Francisco. I hope for everyone's sake, the rest of the country will follow suit.

For all the beatings California takes, I am proud to say we are more progessive than many other states.

Well It covers same gender adult relationships and over 65 groups, I am uncertain if it applies to the younger set since marriage is an option available to them.

I have been trying to find the whole text of AB 205, thus far it appears that the Clan (GLBT community takes the time to highlight the same partner aspect and not the rest.

Though Prophecy Central has a few things to say about it, again focusing on the gay aspect and not the full legal ramifications.

Not much is being said about the other aspects, such as the allowances for two individuals over the age of 65 to register as domestic partners reaping the legal and financial benefits without having to take on a marriage.

Look up AB 205 and see what you can find.

Sorry couldn't have been more helpful.

Cheers

David
