Seriously, NNN, who cares about the Canadian debate tonight? I don't think the fact that it clashes with the US debate is of any great significance. Isn't the Globe saying our election is a done deal anyway, and that Harper has run a successful, if terribly dull, campaign?
I think as Canadians we ought to be interested in who America elects, and realistically, don't we want to see Palin crash and burn?
From your first link:

"I couldn't write something as wacky as the Sarah Palin rise to power, and I'm looking forward to that debate on Thursday kind of like some people look forward to a cock fight or a dog fight."

People not familiar with Canadian politics just have to see how hokey the campaign ads are:

Family is everything.

Harper's trying his best in the latest sweater ads, of which there are several, to try not to look so wooden. And 'privately' too, he spontaneously gave his daughter a squeeze on the arm, as he saw her off to school, which was better than the handshake he gave his son. Roll Eyes

Hasn't Mr Harper, in the past, lifted whole phrases from the speech of a politician from the Antipodes? There was something about him doing a verbatim impression of one such, reported in The Times this week.

(I just knew there was something interesting in Canadian politics. If only I could remember the details Frown )

50,000 more Manitoba cars require immobilizers

From CBC.CA

Mechanics in Manitoba can expect visits from about 50,000 more vehicle owners this year, as the cars and trucks are added to a list of vehicles that must have electronic ignition immobilizers installed to qualify for insurance.

Some drivers complain the program is a hassle, but Manitoba Public Insurance say it's paying off, and the province is on its way to the lowest auto-theft statistics in a decade.

In 2004 — the worst year on record — 9,000 vehicles were stolen in Winnipeg alone.

Four years later, that number has dropped by two-thirds — welcome news in the city, which has long been considered the country's car-theft capital.

"[It's] very difficult to determine where the auto theft rates are going, but we do know that Manitoba will be probably No. 5, No. 6 six provincially, and Winnipeg could drop as low as six or seven on the scale," said MPI spokesman Brian Smiley.

Smiley also credits the Winnipeg auto theft suppression strategy for the big decreases. Under that program, underage car thieves who are considered at the highest risk of reoffending can be contacted by justice officials as often as every three hours to ensure they're not out stealing cars. They can also be outfitted with GPS tracking devices as part of a one-year pilot project.

In a related story, the Canadian PM's office released a report stating that immobile cars get considerably better gas mileage than those in motion. Eh.

Plight of B.C. sockeye draws global concern
World's leading conservation authority calls for halt to commercial fishery, other drastic measures

From Canada.com

A combination of ignorance and neglect by the Canadian government appears to be pushing many British Columbia sockeye runs towards extinction, according to a new report by the world's leading conservation group.

The report recommends a halt to traditional commercial fishing and reconsideration of artificial spawning programs -- saying both policies are likely contributing to a sockeye decline that is greater here than anywhere else in the world.

Sockeye populations in Russia and Alaska are for the most part thriving, notes the report from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

When asked for comment, local fisherman/comic Roogameister just said "Sockeye to me, sockeye to me, sockeye to me.".

Roll Eyes @DS.

I heard this report on the news on my way home this evening:
B.C. man comes out swinging in bear attack

I can understand the man killing the bear, but why did the cubs have to be euthanized? Is this usual when the mother is killed? Couldn't they have been hand reared?

Residents Take airport Grievance to Auditor-general

( from Canada.com / Montreal Gazette)

A coalition of Montreal residents has appealed to the auditor-general to investigate Trudeau Airport and what the coalition sees as unchecked expansion that does not consider impact on the environment or the quality of life of thousands of Montrealers.

In a petition delivered yesterday to Sheila Fraser, Citizens for Quality of Life asked for an investigation into grievances that date back to 1995, when flights were transferred from Mirabel to Dorval without, the coalition says, public consultation.

Night flights, the loss of green space to airport expansion, an increasing number of flight traffic and noise pollution are all cited in the petition.

Luc Marion, president of the coalition representing residents in eight Montreal municipalities, including Dorval, St. Laurent, Lachine and Lasalle, said the group was forced to go to the auditor-general after the Supreme Court of Canada refused to grant its request to launch a class-action lawsuit against ADM.

"We are questioning the manner in which ADM has been able to move from Mirabel to Dorval, expand as it has without (looking at) the environmental impact now, 20 and 30 years from now," Marion said.

There were 543 daily aircraft movements at Dorval airport in 1995, the year before flights were moved back there from Mirabel, Marion said.
By 2007, that number had jumped to 666 a day.

The Northwest Passage is up for grabs, if it even exists.

Our American friends don't have the wherewithal or tolerance to take it(the cold), even if they wanted to.

Big day on Tuesday: the elections. The Tories were doing well in the polls, until the economic bottom fell out. As of Friday the C$ is .85 US, after hitting $1.10 earlier in the summer. As with other exchanges, the TSX has plummeted to 9065. I watched the English debates, and was not much impressed with anyone but the Green Party candidate, and she had nothing to lose. I'll be watching the returns, but my bet is the Conservatives will end up with another minority.
