| This was MY idea Roog ..you just had to post first, didn't you? We need an introduction, and perhaps an explanation, don't we? In the spirit of Fred's excellent, "News from Britain," thread, Roog and I decided we should start a "Canadian News" thread. Except we don't really have any news, other than stuff about hockey and snow. Oh this is kind of interesting: Third right foot washes up on B.C. coast | | | | Posts: 4666 | Location: Ontario, Canada | Registered: 10-27-06 |

| We do whine, although we generally have it pretty good here. This morning on the CBC, people are complaining about Ontario's new public holiday, which is today, Our provincial government unimaginatively called it "Family Day." The complaints aren't so much about the fact we get an extra holiday, but that the public wasn't consulted as to when it should be, and what it should be called. But of course, being Canadian, we'll complain over a beer, shake our heads and say, "Oh well." | | | | Posts: 4666 | Location: Ontario, Canada | Registered: 10-27-06 |

| We've been promised another public holiday in Britain . We think it'll be on February 29th every year . Why didn't they just call yours the 'Oh Well Holiday', dg ? They may well do, eventually. Some of our holidays and festivals have informal or popular names (and Friday in every working week is "Poets Day" ) [If you don't have Poets Day in North America, I can explain what Poets Day means to us] | | | | Posts: 13036 | Location: Newmarket, UK/ Antibes, S.France | Registered: 07-14-02 |

dance girl quote: "But of course, being Canadian, we'll complain over a beer" Hmm. Maybe I'll start a Paris report. That way I can "whine" into my "wine". That'll show y'all. | | | |

| So, when are you guys going to have an election? March? April? Oh wait, I think Dionne and Harper are agreeing on something. | | | |

Don't you pay any attention, Canadians. It's not given to all of us to put on a talent show lasting a year . My only wonder is how it is that Simon Cowell isn't involved in their thing | | | | Posts: 13036 | Location: Newmarket, UK/ Antibes, S.France | Registered: 07-14-02 |

| Roog has gone AWOL..again...I think he lost interest already, which is typically Canadian. So I'll have to answer all questions on behalf of the whole country. quote: Originally posted by FredPuli: [If you don't have Poets Day in North America, I can explain what Poets Day means to us]
I had to look it up. Very funny, and much more original than TGIF..except if you work on Saturdays, I guess. I'll let you explain to everyone else, Fred. Colin, you really should start a Paris report. I'm sure nobody whines in such a beautiful city. quote: quote: Originally posted by juanruiz: So, when are you guys going to have an election? March? LOL. Stephen Harper is our Prime Minister, and has about as much charisma as a dead fish. Stéphane Dion is the leader of the Liberal opposition. If we do have an election, it will be called, and over with in a couple of months. The last election campaign was 8 weeks, and that was considered a long one. You say Harper and Dion agreed on something, jr? Hmmm... Harper probably just nodded in agreement. I don't think he understands anything Dion says in English. | Poets Day is on Friday when we Britons at work in offices take time , before the end of the working day, to go out to remember our great poets, the cry going up "Remember, good people, it is Poets Day today, let us adjourn and give our attendance at the sign of the Bard of Avon, The Shakespeare Arms" (or the White Swan or whatever sign is appropriate). Later in the evening two great foreign composers are remembered, by some, when people think of both Brahms and Liszt. Sadly vulgarians have snidely decried these traditions, claiming falsely 1)that Poets is an acronym for Push Off Early, Tomorrow's Saturday ! ('Push off' or its alternative P word, which refers to micturition, plus 'off', is British for 'leave')and 2)The Shakespeare Arms etc are always pubs. Worse, they claim that 'Brahms and Liszt' is rhyming slang for another use of that P word, this time ending -ed and meaning inebriated. | | | | Posts: 13036 | Location: Newmarket, UK/ Antibes, S.France | Registered: 07-14-02 |

Nope, I haven't lost interest yet. I am on a quest for that big "scoop" all journalists are looking for. | | | | Posts: 2484 | Location: Edmonton, Alberta Canada | Registered: 06-06-02 |

Well what do you expect? It's fricking, freezing Winnipeg! There is NOTHING else to do there! It's the wasteland of Canada. If a Canadian is offered a choice between a vacation in Winnipeg and one in the Artic Circle, well let's just say they wouldn't be snapping up tickets for the Winnipeg trip. And by the way, your link cited the previous world record holders: If the Winnipeg effort is sanctioned by Guinness, it will handily beat the current record, which is held by a group of 102 people in Britain who were, strangely enough, dressed up in Santa Claus outfits.(what were they thinking..Santa Claus suits?) quote: In other news Québécois are demanding the stoning death of a school teacher who allowed the students in her class to name a teddy bear savon et l'eau, claiming it to be blasphemy and a threat to their way of life.
I believe we have at least two Québécois on this site. You are going to be in soooo much trouble. | | | | Posts: 4666 | Location: Ontario, Canada | Registered: 10-27-06 |

| Loonie surges to 2-month high 3-cent gain in last 2 days
Last Updated: Tuesday, February 26, 2008 | 1:51 PM NT CBC News
The Canadian dollar has jumped in value for the second straight day — reaching its highest level in two months.
The loonie gained 1.31 cents US Tuesday against its U.S. counterpart to close at $1.0179 US. It gained 1.67 cents US on Monday.
At its highest point Tuesday, the Canadian currency was trading at 1.0220 US — its highest level since Dec. 28, according to Bank of Canada figures.
Currency analysts said rising commodity prices are behind much of the loonie's recent strength. Canada's commodity wealth is widely seen as being a major factor in the value of its currency, so when commodity prices rise, the loonie usually follows.
Oil futures topped $101 US a barrel in New York trading on Tuesday, natural gas prices were up, gold futures gained more than $9.80 US to $950.30 US an ounce and wheat traded above $12 US a bushel for the first time ever.
The U.S. dollar also came under renewed pressure after a measure of wholesale inflation rose by a full percentage point in January — the biggest increase in 16 years — and the U.S. Conference Board said consumer confidence fell dramatically last month to a five-year low.
The loonie went as high as $1.10 US in early November, capping a spectacular climb from below 62 cents US in early 2002. It then slid to around the 97-cent US level in January before beginning its most recent rise. | | | | Posts: 2484 | Location: Edmonton, Alberta Canada | Registered: 06-06-02 |
