SKOPJE – A Macedonian court convicted a bear of theft and damage for stealing honey from a beekeeper who fought off the attacks with thumping "turbo-folk" music.

"I tried to distract the bear with lights and music because I heard bears are afraid of that," Zoran Kiseloski told top-selling daily Dnevnik after the yearlong case of the bear versus the beekeeper ended in the beekeeper's favour.

"So I bought a generator, lit up the area and put on songs of (Serbian "turbo-folk" star) Ceca."

The bear stayed away for a few weeks, but came back when the generator ran out of power and the music fell silent, Kiseloski said, adding, "it attacked the beehives again."

A court in the city of Bitola found the bear guilty, and since it had no owner and belonged to a protected species, ordered the state to pay the 140,000 denars ($3,500 U.S.) damage it caused to the hives.

There was no information on the whereabouts of the bear.

You laugh, Roog. Honey is big business in Macedonia. Most desserts, some main dishes, and even some drinks are made with honey.

(Serbian music will drive away any wild animal.)

I had no idea this thread existed, perhaps even the Macedonians in fact. No offense intended. I had lunch with a Macedonian last week and hired one at work just yesterday.

This could be fun. Smile

(btw, take out the accidental period in DG's initial post and he's calling me roog honey.)
Just like when we're alone in chat. Roll Eyes

The Republic of Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy with an executive government composed of a coalition of parties from the unicameral legislature (Собрание, Sobranie) and an independent judicial branch with a constitutional court. The Assembly is made up of 120 seats and the members are elected every four years. The role of the President of the Republic is mostly ceremonial, with the real power resting in the hands of the President of the Government. The President is the commander-in-chief of the state armed forces and a president of the state Security Council. The President of the Republic is elected every five years and he or she can be elected twice at most. The current President is Branko Crvenkovski.

Thanks, Roog. My Dedo (Grandfather) was in that organization mentioned in the clip. (Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization) When he was there, the Macedonians were fighting to overthrow the Turkish Ottoman occupiers of Macedonia. We think he was involved in the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising, but we're not certain. I found out more about what he did after he died than when he was alive. He didn't want to talk about it. In fact, he lived over half his life here under an assumed name rather than his birthname. (And he always had a switchblade in his right pants pocket, even when he had a 3 piece suit on.)

From some of the old men in the neighborhood and the church, I heard some of those stories. One man, who came to the US in the 1970s from the part of Macedonia that is still occupied by Greece, to us of how the Macedonians were still being treated as less than 2nd class citizens. It was illegal to speak Macedonian, and the Macedonian schools were all closed.

You're welcome, and that's interesting about your granddad in the 'IMRO.'
