Ok, I been going to the dentist for fillings on a few teeth. Well after the dentist is done with my mouth it's numb for awhile. The past two times I went to the dentist was about 2:00pm in the day and around 6 or 7 that evening that numb feeling is gone from my face. This is the odd part that I don't remember ever happening to me before, around 10 or later in the night my throat starts feeling numb then the numb feeling goes in my chest & then down in my stomach. It makes me feel very odd. Is this normal?

I am not an expert in dental work, but I am a nurse and I would have to suggest that any time you experience a different reaction from a similar circumstance, you should probably give the dentist, or your family physician a call.

Just a suggestion, to be on the safe side.

I agree with Shel, but I'd like to add that it's possible the nerve that the novacain was shot into is slightly damaged.

Shortly after having a thyroidectomy my parathyroids failed. Your parathyroids control the calcium in your body, and your nerves run on calcium, as do your muscles. Simply put--no calcium, no nerves. When my parathyroids failed, my entire body went numb but it was worst in my face. After this episode I suffered nerve damaged--if certain parts of my face are touched (ie, if I sleep on one side) my face and neck will go numb in a similar fashion to what you have experienced.

However, it could be other things. It would be best to report it to the dentist and be sure it is simply mild nerve damage.

Pace Ace, I got shots of novacain inside my jaw in the back of my mouth. One time, it did numb me down in to my esophagus and in to my stomach. It frightened me a bit, but the numbness finally dissipated. Now, when i get those shots, it doesn't numb me like it did that one time. Hope it gets better for you.

I talked to my dentist about this on the phone & I he told me it was not normal. He said I might be allergic to the stuff he used to numb me.

I think what he used was novicaine. I'm sure I have had shots like this before but why would this happened now unless what MT2 said, that he may be giving me shots in a damaged nerve?

I had to go back to the dentist a few days after I posted this topic and he used something different to numb me up. I did not have the same reaction as I did before.

That's good, at least!

I was thinking, I know that with a morphine allergy, you have to have morphine once before you'll have a reaction. I'd had it for kidney stones once, and just felt GOOD, and then when I had it a couple years later after surgery it made me vomit. So it is possible to use something once and not have a reaction even if you are allergic.

BUT--that wasn't an allergic reaction. Just be sure you tell every other dentist you ever have about that, so it doesn't happen again.

Good luck!
