The smallpox vaccine contains purified, concentrated freeze-dried calf lymph. Antibiotics called polymyxin B sulfate, dihydrostreptomycin sulfate, chlortetracycline hydrochloride, and neomycin sulfate are added during processing and trace amounts may be in the final product. The diluting fluid for smallpox vaccine contains 50% glycerin, with 0.25% phenol in sterile water for injection, USP. Once rehydrated, the vaccine contains approximately 100 million infectious vaccinia viruses per milliliter, with 100 doses per vial.
