I have a fear of flying(long before 9-11)and will be taking a trip to Scotland in the spring. What medications could I suggest to my Dr. that would knock me out, and not give me a drug induced hang over?

I don't think it is a good idea to get something to knock you out completely. You might try Kava-kava, a herb available in capsule form, which will make you mellow and unconcerned about problems.

I always take Dramamine (bad ears that make me SERIOUSLY motion sick). The non non-drowsy (obviously smile ) knocks me out cold, but I am not blah once it wears off. However, on a trip that long (assuming you are on the east coast, that's about 14 hours, right?) you'll have to redose 4 times.

Dramamine works for me, too. You also might try taking along a bunch of turkey sandwiches! big grin

If you plan to ask your doc for something, why not let him make the suggestion, rather than tell him what unknown people suggested. As to over the counter meds, another choice is benadryl or similar antihistamine: they cause drowsiness and don't hang over.

thanks to everyone! I'll be looking into all suggestions, however, I will probably do what the Dr. orders. This trip is already causing anxiety, I almost think taking a few short trips might help ease the fear and maybe I won't need anything, which is what I'd prefer.Thanks.

Just have a couple of drinks - that's why they serve alcohol on planes! If you're going at night and want to sleep, I recommend Ambien. I took it and slept 8 hours between NY and London, and another 8 hours between London and Nairobi.

You might want to check out some programs that address the fear of flight issue. I'm sure there are some that your doctor could recommend or at least give you ideas of where to check. Those types of programs help you manage your fears, and possibly without the use of drugs. Since your trip isn't until spring, you have plenty of time to work on your fears, rather than stewing about them for months. Drugs might make you relax once you are on the plane, but they can't make you GET on the airplane. It's just a thought. smile

specifically, hypnosis techniques can be very effective: if you can find a reputable hypnotherapist, all it takes usually is a couple of visits and the use of a personalized tape for you to listen to.

roflmao@ redder!

Another suggestion you may want to think of - I give my son Benedryl when we fly. Ostensibly its for his bad ears (poor bugger inherited them from me) but its also to keep him groggy and quiet. I am sure everyone who flies has been on a flight with a screaming toddler - we have too hence the Benedryl. I'm not suggesting you are going to pitch a fit but Benedryl - any antihistamine, actually - is guaranteed to make you sleepy.

I would also recommend away from alcohol if you tend towards even the slightest touch of motion sickness. One of my husband's friends drank a couple beers before being transported to Saudi - he threw up all over his commander.
