My grandma still has my grandfather's artificial leg (he passed away several years ago.) It is in GREAT condition because grandpa only wore it about 10 times because he never got the hang of walking with it. So my question is... does anyone know how I can sell it? We already contacted the local hospital and artificial limb shops, and they can't buy it. Is there anywhere online that will buy used artificial limbs? I know this is the weirdest question ever, but we're running out of possibilities and I figured it wouldn't hurt to post here. Thanks! Smile

Ebay.com is one place to sell it. Another option is to donate it to World Extremities, an ebay-registered nonprofit organization whose mission is to raise used prosthetics, parts, crutches and wheelchairs to take to mine victems in third world countries. current projects are Cambodia and an Emergency Campaign for the victims of the Tsunami.. there are an average of 4 out of 10 patients receiving amputations there. Since amputees have no place in society and are concidered burdens by even their own families, it is important to give them as much independence as possible, as quickly as possible. Another possibility is to check with the Salvation Army, Red Cross. VFW, or the American Legion.

Artificial limbs (hearing aids and all of those sorts of things) are molded and sized for the individual who uses it.

In the case of an artificial leg the length would be determined by where the amputation took place plus the height of the patient – further the “cup” (the place the stump was set in) was shaped from a mold made from the patient’s stump – Not all amputations are equal in diameter and although they may “look” the same there are various minor differences from patient to patient which would lead to the cup either not fitting perfectly or having hills and valleys which would rub the patient’s stump causing irritation.

You might be able to donate it to a charity that sends stuff like medical equipment to far off places where health care is limited – they might be able to “make do” with it, might be able to use it with some modifications for a patient. I doubt they will buy it; it would have to be a charitable contribution.

Most of the charities that do supply artificial limbs accept money donations so the limb can be made – again this is due to the variations of amputated limbs (stumps).

If you are interested in donating it you could contact your local theatre groups or haunted house attractions. In fact, I'd say a Haunted House would be the best route to go because they can always modify something like that for a prop. But if you are hoping to make money off of it, then DGs suggestions are probably the best route. Good luck with it Smile
