I remember as a kid getting a shot. I always thought it was a small pox vaccination. I was in California at the time (go figure!). My shot was put on the inside of my upper arm not to show the scar unlike anyone I have ever met. It is on the top of the upper arm on the deltoid muscle.

Am I correct about this, was that a small pox vaccination? My kids were not required to get this vaccination. I have it and all in my age group do also. What vaccination did we get?

I'm wondering if I'm getting senile on the subject. Time does fly and it's hard to keep up with the details in life!

Yes, that definitely sounds like the smallpox vaccination.
I do not have the exact numbers, but smallpox was eradicated from the United States in the seventies, so children stopped getting the vaccination because there was no threat. Smallpox was eradicated worldwide in the eighties, I believe.
The fear now is that terrorists may have gotten hold of batches of smallpox and could use this as a biological weapon. This is an extreme threat because anyone about twenty-five or younger has never been vaccinated, and the vaccinations of the older folk might not be effective any longer.
They don't have a lot of the old vaccine left, and that vaccination was not a very pleasant experience, from what I've heard. So they have been working on developing a new vaccine. It had been deemed pretty successful, until it started killing people with heart problems...

No, you are not senile. You were vaccinated, and your children were not. And it will be up to you whether you want to be re-vaccinated and whether you want your children to be vaccinated, when the vaccine becomes available to the general public.

Elexina, here in GA folks 32 and younger didn't receive the vaccine. I didn't realize that until I dated a boy 7 years younger than me and he asked what the scar was on my arm. Told him it was from the smallpox vaccine and everyone has one...well, apparently everyone born up to 1971! LOL That was the first sign of a generation gap!
But I do wonder how long that vaccine is good for....

Georgia, that is a question presently in the mind of doctors and scientists as well. (And who would volunteer for exposure to this deadly disease "Just to find out"!)

If I dated a guy without a small pox vaccination, it would be called robbing the cradle.
