As a general surgeon, on the staff of several hospitals over the years, I've never been required to have ACLS certification. BLS is required, and I recertify every two years. On our staff, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, intensivists are required to be ACLS certified, which to me seems really silly: it's what they do all the time, with or without such a requirement, and it simply means extra bureaurcratic hassle.
