Two days ago, I chipped a tooth eating a salad. A salad for cripes sake! Just a tiny chip, no biggie, my hygienist filed it down a bit so it doesn't scratch my tongue. But in looking at my front two teeth we realized that they're pretty weak and worn and see-through at the bottom and in danger of cracking big time. My hygienist says I need to start wearing my night guard to keep me from grinding my teeth.
But, are there any toothpastes, or vitamin supplements or whatever, that promote and improve tooth strength? Thanks!

Once the enamel starts wearing away or becomes weakened there is no way to restore it. That's when Dentists will start recommending caps/crows or veneers.

Wonderful. I'm too young for this crap!

What about maintenance, though? We take calcium for our bones, is that good for teeth, too, or is there something else?

Calcium is needed for the formation of baby teeth and then is needed to help the tooth develop fully. And while calcium helps to keep bones strong and may prevent them from getting fragile it does little to strengthen the enamel on a fully developed tooth. It does, however, help keep the jaw-bone strong.

The only thing you can do is work to prevent cavities. Flouride is perhaps the best preventative measure.

I will add that genetically some people are predisposed to having excellent teeth while others will have trouble no matter how carefully they care for their teeth. Frown

The best thing you can do is to do the best care, do the right things and hope that mother nature is more forgiving than she is wont to be at times.
