When it's DO, it means doctor of osteopathy; similar to MD, but more emphasis (in some cases) on manipulation of the spine. Nowadays, many DO's are quite equivalent to MD's. If it really was OD and not DO, it usually means an optometrist, someone who checks vision and prescribes glasses, but not an eye physician.

When they are a DO it is like Sid said but the focus on a more holistic care of the person. In otherwords their body mine and spirit. They do believe in the spine being in aline. From what I have heard a DO goes to school the same length of time as a MD. But my question would be what is the DO missing from his studies that the MD is getting when he is learning about this particular way of care. I suggest you talk to other people and see who they like. But I tell you I have worked with a lot of Doctors and some of the ones who lack social skills are wonderful doctors and I have seen the ones that the patients just love that are would just say are not as talented as others. Good luck on your search.
