Australians Barry Marshall and Robin Warren have won the Nobel Prize, Medicine, for 2005, for their research into the cause and treatment of stomach ulcers. As a result of their research, two treatments now prove very effective against this miserable, painful and stubborn condition.

I find it very heartening that these men persisted in their research in the face of almost unanimous rejection of their findings by the medical establishment. Now they have been vindicated, and they don't seem to have any resentment towards those doctors and researchers who laughed at them in the early years (1984-1992).

Good guys!

Anybody have any other 'Good guys finish first!' stories?

I'm very happy about this! I suffer from GERD, and in 1999 I was referred to a Gastroenterologist who apparently was up on recent research. He tested for the H-Pylori antibodies, and sure enough, my problems were a result of that.

Thanks to these guys, many people are now finding relief from years of stomach problems...resulting in a better quality of life.

A very well-deserved award!

Giz, what a great post! Smile

I had thought that their award was a good point made for the scientific method (which I have advocated in my religious posts). But we do see 'bad science', and it is usually fuelled by greed, stupidity, conventional thinking, or the desire for journalistic notice.

But yours is an example of the good results of careful science! What a happy outcome! Many doctors in their position would have given up what must have seemed an unpromising line of research.

Good for you that these guys persisted in the face of their governing body's rejection.
