Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing. I read this some where and it made me think . Do you think we will ever find cures for some of our major diseases such as cancer, aids, heart problems? Do you think they have cures for cancer now?

Sam - your powers of observation astound me!

I think, if the human race doesn't kill itself first, it may well cure itself. Eventually.

And have you noticed - as soon as we cure or control one disease, another pops up to plague us?

Yes, some cancers now can be cured - if the cure isn't worse than the disease.

If in your posts you are implying that there are cures for cancers that are being withheld to enrich "health care workers," (do they have cures for cancer now....what would healthcare workers do...) that echoes some of the most bone-headed statements people tend to make from time to time. Ask Lance Armstrong if any progress has been made in cancer treatment. Or Andres Galarraga, or countless millions of people who have been cured. The treatments in the past decades represent major advances in many areas. Cancer is not just one disease: it has different behaviors and different treatment requirements depending on the tissue of origin, etc. Some remain highly resistant. But can any thinking person who reads the newspapers doubt that breakthroughs are on the verge on many fronts, that research is pushing closer to molecular understanding of cancer, and treatments are evolving in that direction.

this is not considered a disease, but i sure hope there is a cure for "AUTISM" one day. my son is autistic, and i would give anything if he could be cured. i'm sure there are other families that feel the same way that i do, that are faced with this problem.

Honilov, I know what you mean. I have 2 sons (ages 5 and 7 yo)that are autistic. Only problem is, Autism is a genetic disorder often caused by missing strands of DNA. There is no way to cure it. But potential parents can get tested to see if they are at risk for producing children with this very destructive condition. I, too, wish my boys could be "cured".. the best I can hope for is they will learn to adjust to their deficits and maximize their strengths and become happy adults.

Another good one is, "So you die healthy. So?" As I understand it, the primary problem with cancer is that it is not one disease, but a hundred or more. And with some, they are approaching a "cure" - the death rate for childhood leukemia has dropped dramatically in the last few years, am I right, Sid? About heart disease, I think the mechanical heart and organs grown for transplant may solve that problem, eventually. For AIDS, it's only a matter of time (and money). By which time, smallpox will be back! And why concern yourself with death? When your number comes up, it comes up. Catty(who lives life to enjoy it, however long or short) big grin big grin big grin
