What's the light thing that doctors use to look into your ears in check-ups called? The common way to refer to it or the term a patient commonly calls it.

What's something else a doctor that kids check-ups would keep in his pockets?

Here is an otoscope. This is primarily used to examine the ear, but can in fact be used for much of the routine ENT examination. The example shown is designed for use with a disposable speculum. The instrument contains its own light source and magnification to give a view of the tympanic membrane.

When examining the ear, the pinna should be pulled up and backwards to help straighted the ear canal. The correct size of speculum will then allow examination of the ear canal and tympanic membrane.

This instrument can be used as a light source for examining the oral cavity and also for nasal examination. - Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

Check the picture there.

Well, the doctor doesn't actually keep that in his pocket, there are battery recharging stands they rest on while not being used (they can also be heavy with the battery, so it is a bit cumbersome to carry around with you in a pocket.

A Stethoscope is a commonly used assessment tool. These are used to listen to sounds the body makes. By listening to the sounds, nurses and doctors can often tell that there may be something wrong by what the sounds are like.

Another instrument a doctor might use is a Rubber Hammer. This is designed to test your reflexes.

Many times the doctor may want to check your throat and mouth. She uses a Tongue Depressor to do this.

Some doctors have a special sort of flashlight/tongue depressor device.

Medical personnel use Exam Gloves to protect both themselves and their patients. Open cuts in the examiner's hands can both give and recieve germs and bacteria, risking infection spread.

Ah. The otoscope's what I was thinking of. I need an instrument that a kid would commonly know the name of and I can't see a kid calling it that. And I've already got the stethoscope going around his neck. Rubber Hammer sounds good though. I think I'll use that one.

Sorry, it's not common enough. Thanks though.

But..., do doctors ever store tongue depressors in their pockets?

As long as we are talking about pockets and instruments.. I'd like to share a direct observation of a doctor taking a pen out of his pocket, using it to measure a wound, putting it back in his pocket.. and then putting it into his mouth while considering the data.

Euuuuuwwwwwwwwwwwww
