I would assume, due to the nature of the procedure, that vasectomy is a completely (100%) reliable form of birth control. But is there any evidence to the contrary? I suppose that any OOPS! could be could be due to a botched procedure, but is it otherwise considered to be a sure thing? Also, is there any effect on sex drive or performance, again, as long as the procedure is successful?

Although I have not experienced this personally, may I speak on behalf of the men I know who have gone through this procedure?

From what I have been told the procedure does affect the sex drive and performance...in a POSITIVE note. Maybe it's psychological because they know they can enjoy sex without the reprocussions of an unwanted pregnancy. But the men I know have a longer staying power and are more "erotically charged". And a plus for the ladies, if a woman is susceptible to yeast infections or has an allergic reaction from sperm (yes, there are some who do)she doesn't experience those problems with a man who has had a vasectomy.

It can be a painful procedure. And you'll be using an ice-bag once you get home. But the pain is short lived and the long term benefits all but make up for a little discomfort....so I'm told!

And it is pretty much a "sure thing". But YOU can determine if you want the vas deferens TOTALLY severed, or merely "tied" in the middle. The latter is the choice if you may want to reverse the procedure. It also allows for a possibility of less than 100% effectiveness.

Vasectomy is close to 100%; but there is a small possibility of failure. This can be due to surgical error, or the very rare situation of having an extra vas deferens. It is essential that a person having one follow the instructions afterward, which involve continuing some other form of birth control for a given period of time, after which semen analysis is done to be sure it's free of sperm. There is also a very slight possibility of spontaneous reconnection later, by virtue of leakage out of one end and the sperm finding their way to the other end. As to planned reconnection, as referred to in the above post: there's really not a technique difference in terms of future re-connection. It can be done. But the success rate is at best around 50%, and gets lower the longer the time between vasectomy and reconnection. So one should have it done with the understanding that it's a permanent change.

1: can you stand a hypodermic needle in your nuts to deaden the pain?...that's the worst part. you gotta walk around with ice in your underwear for a couple of days but it's not too bad and plus you'll get real "niffty" schedule III's for the pain.

2: after you heal and you have sex...for me the orgasms are mind blowin'. seriously.

oh yeah...you're gonna have to masturbate in the doctor's office bathroom to get a sperm sample after a week for a cell count. you have to do it there because sperm has to be tested when it's "fresh" so the lab will know if the cells were dead when they came out rather than being dead from being on the "shelf" so no you can't bring some from home.

when i did it the girls in office applauded when i came out...it was embarrassing. funny but embarrassing.
