.....but I found this story completely fascinating!! How far can we be from a vaccine for other kinds of cancer? This is probably the biggest medical story of the new century, and is a ray of hope for society. I can't believe this story has not been on the lips of everyone everywhere!!!

-------- Yankee, you're so right! Wouldn't it be a dream come true to be able to have our childern routinely vaccinated and live without fear of cancer? As far as the cervical cancer vaccine---sign me up now. My darling aunt died a horrible death from cervical cancer. But on the other hand, it might have been detected earlier had she had regular pabs tests and she didn't.
Ladies, PLEASE don't put "those" tests off.

This really strikes home because I was one parsec ('scuse my phraseology) from cervical cancer and I had surgery because of it. (As a result I became pregnant because the metastasis of the cells were preventing pregnancy and I hadn't realized it!!).

It IS exciting news, but it's not literally a vaccine against cancer. That WOULD be earth-shaking, and it (or something like it) will happen some day. This was a vaccine against the virus, Human Papilloma Virus, that causes cervical cancer. Viral vaccines have been around a long time; a relation between a specific cancer and a specific virus, and the ability to prevent the cancer by vaccinating against that virus is, so far, unique to HPV and cervical cancer.
